“Early in 1946 my friend Henry Schuman suggested to me in London, where I was then living, that I should write a popular kind of book on the history of geography and navigation. (...) In fact the extraordinary chaper of history which I call here the Golden Age of Geography and which corresponds to the period from the first voyage round the Cape of Good Hope in 1488 to the first voyage round the world in 1519-22, embracing the discovery of America and of the maritime route to India, cannot very well be understood without the study, however brief, of the evolution of navigation and geographical knowledge since ancient times. Against that background, which is not so well know as it should be, the Golden Age of Geography appears as the natural conclusion of a long sequence of historical circumstances and shines with still more splendour. So this volume deals particularly with background, and the next one will describe and discuss the great avents which make up the Golden Age of Geography and their causes and effects. Nevertheless, though one volume will be tne continuation of the other, each of them will be a self-contained unit.”

Conjunto de 138 páginas unidas entre si com tachas metálicas,  com anotações e correcções manuscritas pelo autor. O conjunto possui índice, “Foreword’ e bibliografia, como se estivesse pronto para a sua publicação. Porém, para além de não termos encontrado referências à sua publicação, tem, escrito pelo autor a letra vermelha na capa o seguinte: “Para Deitar fora” e a azul “inutilizado”, igualmente escrito no primeiro capítulo.

Tem um esquema desenhado à mão com a legenda: Esquema para ilustrar a medição da circunferência da Terra feita por Eratóstenes em fins do sé. III a.C.”

Falta da capa posterior. Supostamente inédito.
