“(...) No single Portuguese dance or costume can represent the whole country, for each province has its own characteristics. In the northen province of Tras-os-Montes simple rhythms and figures are predominant, and the weather being cold in winter high jums are included in their dances. (...) In sunner one can see good dances performed in the open air: the Minho Vira — different from the Lisbon Vira; the Gota of the Longsways Country Dance type; the Pretinho, similar to the Gota but getting quicker and quicker, while the dance-song sings of the black King of the Monkeys; o Pai do Ladrão, a round dance with a girl in the middle, her partner kneeling in front of her at a given line. There is also the Verdegaio ( the Green Parrot), usually a Square for four, in many variants. The Chula too, which can be a Maia, a slow variant, the Passacalle which is a quick one (...)”. — retirado de Introduction.
