“The relations between Portugal and Japan began in 1542 or 1543 when three Portuguese sailors were cast ashore on the Island of Tanegashima. Once the island had become Known to the Portuguese, their traders and missionaries began to visit Japan and eventually to exert their influence on Japonese civilisation. (...)
