“It has been claimed that Zea mays exist in Africa before the discovery of Amarica, but the plant is more generally considered to be a native of America, which could have spread through other continents only in post-Columbian times. (...) The identification milho zaburro = milho maçaroca = Zea mays has been largely based on the writings of Ramusio (1550), who, in his translation of an anonymous Portuguese pilot’s account of his trip to S. Tomé, stated that the milho zaburro of this island and of Santiago, was the same plant which in American they called mays, which had maturing period of 40 days (...)”.
